Alright, folks, gather ’round, let me tell you about this little project I just finished up. So, I’ve been eyeballing this Patek Philippe Calatrava, the 6119G-001, for a while now. Beautiful watch, but way out of my budget. That’s when I thought, “Why not try to make one myself?” Sounds crazy, right? But I rolled up my sleeves and got to work.
First thing I did was study the real deal. This Patek Philippe Calatrava 6119G-001, it’s a fancy piece. White gold, 39mm across, and only 8.08mm thick. It’s even got this “Clous de Paris” pattern, which is just a fancy way of saying it’s got a cool texture. And it’s water-resistant up to 30 meters, not that I’d take it swimming. Plus, it has a see-through back, made of sapphire crystal, so you can see all the tiny gears and stuff moving inside.
I started by getting the dimensions right. 39mm diameter, that’s the sweet spot. Then, I had to figure out the thickness. 8.08mm, that’s pretty thin for a watch with so much going on inside. After a few tries, I got a case that was just the right size.
Next up, that “Clous de Paris” pattern. Now, I ain’t no fancy watchmaker, but I figured out a way to get a similar texture. It took some trial and error, a lot of patience, and a few messed-up pieces, but I finally got something that looked pretty darn close.
The movement, well, that’s a whole other story. I wasn’t about to build a Patek Philippe movement from scratch. So, I found a decent automatic movement that fit the case and had a similar look. It’s not the real deal, but it keeps time pretty well, and it looks the part from the outside.
For the case back, I wanted that sapphire crystal look. I managed to get my hands on a piece of sapphire glass and cut it to fit. It was a bit tricky, but I got it in there, and it looks pretty sharp.
The End Result
After weeks of tinkering, I finally put the whole thing together. And you know what? It turned out pretty good! It’s not a genuine Patek Philippe, and it doesn’t have all the fancy bells and whistles, but it’s got the look, the feel, and it tells time. Plus, I made it myself, which makes it pretty special, at least to me.
Here’s a little breakdown of what I ended up with:
- Diameter: 39mm, just like the real one.
- Thickness: About 8.10mm. I am really close!
- Case: It’s got that textured look.
- Movement: A decent automatic movement.
- Case Back: Sapphire crystal, just like the original.
- Water Resistance: Let’s just say I won’t be taking it for a swim.
So, there you have it. My homemade Patek Philippe Calatrava 6119G-001. It was a fun project, and I learned a lot along the way. Would I do it again? Maybe. But for now, I’m pretty happy with how this one turned out.
